The threshold principle

The body's adaptive machinery is hormetic: it doesn't respond to comfortable use, only to threatened collapse. The notes don't name "hormesis" explicitly — but the structure is hormetic throughout (cold, fasting, eccentric loading, lactate, β-hydroxybutyrate).

BDNF and the molecular cascade

The neurochemistry of adaptation (raw/keep/bdnf-bdnf-brain-derived-neurotrophic-factor-mechanisms.md):

BJJ's pressure-inoculation produces larger acute BDNF spikes than steady-state cardio because it combines all three load types. The single-set-to-failure / Heavy Duty / Mike Mentzer / Arthur Jones lineage is the resistance-training tradition that maps best onto threshold theory — minimal time, maximal stimulus.

Nutrition, fasting, recovery: scaffolding around intensity

Dose-dependent BDNF support (raw/keep/nutrition-for-bdnf.md, raw/keep/intensity-iq-maxing.md):

  • Omega-3 (1–2 g/day EPA + DHA) — small to moderate elevations of serum BDNF
  • Polyphenols — cocoa, curcumin, berries

  • Sleep — non-negotiable; the recovery cycle in which adaptation actually happens

Effects are small to moderate (SMD 0.2–0.7) and require ≥8–12 weeks of consistent practice. The case is for cumulative integration, not single-bullet interventions.

Personality scaffolds biology

  • Conscientiousness — the master variable; without it, no protocol survives
  • Low agreeableness (paradoxically) — supports autonomy, the willingness to ignore social pressure that would dilute intensity

High culture as social technology of intensity

Group music, languages, athletics, complex problem-solving, and physical games are how civilizations organize repeated threshold stimulus across generations. This re-reads high-culture-and-aesthetics biologically: opera and Latin and chess and golf are not mere refinement; they are the species-typical ways human nervous systems are kept adapted across cultural time. The body as political and spiritual substrate

The deepest claim — that the same threshold principle structures political, intellectual, and spiritual formation:

  • Saxon protocol (raw/keep/saxon-protocol.md) — Pomodoro micro-batches, color-coded steps, error logs, body doubling. Designed for severe-ADHD execution; turns out to be the general scaffolding for any threshold practice.
  • Ignatian Examen (raw/keep/the-ignatian-examen-as-training-log.md) — the daily training log: gratitude → ask for light → review → contrition → resolution. Consolations and desolations are diagnostic data. (spiritual-formation)
  • Lectio Divina — a cognitive set; reading to the point of MCF, then resting.
  • Liturgical fasting (Advent / Lent) — periodization. The Church's calendar is hormesis at the civilizational scale.
  • Prayer — spiritual MMF. The point at which the soul collapses into its weakness is exactly where adaptation begins.

Standing problems and gaps

  • Trainable vs. fixed IQ. The notes simultaneously claim IQ is trainable (Flynn, education adds 1–5 points/year) and that IQ is "a range" with a genetic ceiling (Val66Met, Calvinist power-law). Reconciliation: training moves you within your range; the range is genetic.
  • Far-transfer is small or null. BDNF notes are honest that far-transfer to general IQ is modest. The motivational frame in raw/keep/intensity-iq-maxing.md is more confident than the literature warrants. Effect sizes compound, not multiply.
  • Recovery underspecified. Sleep gets one line; overtraining is not discussed; individual recovery capacity (which the Val66Met-style ceiling implies) is undeveloped.
  • Cardio absent. Steady-state aerobic training (Z2, VO2 max, Attia / Lyon longevity literature) is unfavorably compared to BJJ but the longevity case for it is missing.
  • Hormesis as concept. The mechanism is hormetic throughout but never named. Worth surfacing for connecting to cold, fasting, eccentric loading.
  • Sex and age modifiers. Pediatric plasticity windows, menopause, testosterone trajectories, age-57 natural strength gains (raw/keep/10-lbs-of-muscle.md) are barely addressed.
  • Eugenic-control note. raw/keep/eugenic-control.md pushes the biological-substrate thesis into coercive policy territory that sits awkwardly with the rest. Topic boundary worth flagging.
