Islam

The notes treat Islam not primarily as a personal faith but as a civilizational form: a system that fuses regulator and executive under the Caliph, enforces submission through sharia, and spreads through jihad. The author's central move is comparative and structural — Islam is the foil against which Christianity (the trinitarian "logos machine") and the U.S. Constitution are read as alternatives that separate regulator from executive. From this comes the "American Islam" thesis (american-religion): Christian Nationalism and Intersectional Identity Politics are structurally Islamic because they use state power to enforce a faith. The "Gates of Ijtihad" closing in the 12th–13th century is the master metaphor for civilizational ossification, with the Enlightenment cast as a re-Islamification of Europe. The author personally prefers Arab/Islamic culture to Jewish — "more interesting, more esoteric, more mathematical" — but politically supports crushing political movements that operate on Islamic structural logic.

Islam as civilizational form

The structural diagnosis (raw/keep/zombie-religions.md):

Islam combines regulator (church) and executive (monarch) under one role — the Caliph. Christianity separates them. That is why Christianity produces innovation and Islam produces stagnation.

The Caliph is regulator and ruler simultaneously: he interprets sharia, commands the army, and collects the tax. Without an independent magisterium to constrain him, the legal and theological corpus calcifies — and so does everything downstream. The Ummah is the body of submitted believers; sharia is the code that binds them; jihad is the political mode by which the system spreads. The author treats the structural form as the explanatory variable, not the doctrinal content.

The Gates of Ijtihad

The master historical metaphor (raw/keep/enlightenment-the-gates-of-ijtihad.md, raw/keep/zombie-religions.md, raw/keep/peer-review-is-anti-creative.md):

"In the thirteenth century the voice of heaven moved from the Caliphate to Christendom as the Gates of Ijtihad were closed at Baghdad by Möngke Khan and reopened in Paris by Thomas Aquinas." — raw/keep/enlightenment-the-gates-of-ijtihad.md

Three paths are available for any closed system to receive new content (raw/keep/theosophy.md):

• Ijtihad — independent juristic reasoning. Islam closed this in the 12th–13th century.
• Revelation — direct prophetic communication. Christianity keeps this open through the Holy Spirit.
• The Messiah — the apocalyptic restoration. Judaism awaits this, having closed both other paths (Maimonides parallels the closing of ijtihad in the same period).

The 12th-century Mu'tazilite / Ash'arite quarrel is the moment of decision. Mu'tazilites argued for innovation, reason, and human moral agency; Ash'arites argued for stasis, occasionalism, and divine voluntarism. Ash'arites won. The cost was civilizational: the Islamic golden age (al-Kindi, al-Farabi, Avicenna, al-Biruni, Alhazen, Ibn Khaldun) was over within two generations.

The same quarrel is reread today as e/acc vs. degrowth: innovation vs. stasis, reason vs. tradition. (raw/keep/e-acc-vs-degrowth.md) The article suggests the West is now in the position Islam was in around 1200 — choosing whether to keep its gates open.

Byzantine-Arab tensions and the Eastern Question

The Christian-Islamic frontier is treated as the constitutive long durée of European political form (raw/keep/byzantine-arab.md, raw/keep/history-of-europe.md, raw/keep/sanctum-imperium.md, raw/keep/western-submission.md):

• The Catholic Church, from the 700s through Vienna 1683, organized Europe's defense against Islam and the Ottomans.
• Absolute monarchy emerged in reaction to Ottoman pressure — centralized taxation and standing armies were the only adequate response to the Sublime Porte.
• The Enlightenment was the Islamification of Europe: ideological expansion (jihad) followed by stagnation (taqleed), with rent-seekers solidifying control of regulator + operator. • The Ottoman heritage is genuinely high culture — Fuzûlî, Bâkî, Nedîm, Şeyh Galib, Evliya Çelebi as poets; Itri, Dede Efendi, Cantemir, Tanburi Cemil Bey as composers; Sinan as architect; Nakkaş Osman, Levni, Matrakçı Nasuh as miniaturists. The Founders' Constitution as alternative-to-Islam

The author's load-bearing claim about the American founding (raw/keep/american-islam-2.md, raw/keep/new-cathedral.md):

"Like Islam, these ideologies of CN and IIP are all based on using state power to enforce adherence to a faith system. I think the founders understood islam quite well and they tried to create a better version of it with the constitution." — raw/keep/american-islam-2.md

The Founders, on this reading, designed the Constitution as a better Islam — the same separation of public order from private faith, but with the regulator (the magisterium of constitutional law) split from the executive (the President), and with no Caliphate. The risk is reversion: every generation of Americans re-attempts state enforcement of faith, and every successful attempt brings the system one step closer to the Islamic structural form.

"American Islam" — CN and IIP as structural Islam

The thesis (raw/keep/american-islam-2.md, raw/keep/american-islam.md, raw/keep/new-cathedral.md, raw/keep/juggalo-jihad.md):

"Christian Nationalism (CN) and Intersectional Identity Politics (IIP) are versions of an American Islam where the believers engage in Jihad (revolution) to spread their religion and submit themselves to their idea of the state in exchange for security and stability." — raw/keep/new-cathedral.md

The submission/jihad logic in both:

• Submission — to the Caliph (Islam) / state-as-Allah (CN, IIP) — buys security and stability.
• Jihad — the violent proselytizing arm — spreads the faith and silences dissent.
• Sin redefined as crime against the community rather than offense against God and self. (heresies-and-ideology-as-religion)
• Witch-burning Protestantism as proto-jihad: the European Christian impulse to fight sin "on the heart" gets pushed aside for the revolutionary impulse to fight sin "on earth."

The "American Sharia" rhetoric is sharp:

"One nation under God INDIVISIBLE with liberty and justice for ALL is American SHARIA law imposed by the Washington CALIPHATE that engages in JIHAD to spread AMERICAN ISLAM to the world." — raw/keep/juggalo-jihad.md

The Pledge of Allegiance is American sharia. The oath of office is the American shahada. "'Merica fuck yeah" is the American inshallah. The Constitution becomes the American Quran when Americans forget that the document was designed to prevent this.

Tyranny and Taqleed: AI as closed knowledge

A specific contemporary application (raw/keep/tyranny-and-taqleed.md):

"Artificial intelligence is a kind of modern Taqleed where we create corpus of receive knowledge and then build systems around that knowledge. This process is the closing of the gates of Ijtihad of American Islam." — raw/keep/tyranny-and-taqleed.md

AI is a corpus of received knowledge that systematizes and freezes a particular state of human discourse, then enforces it as the operational ground truth. This is taqleed at civilizational scale: it closes the gates of ijtihad of American Islam by making "what the model says" the new common-knowledge floor. The proposed counter is for the Catholic Church to operate its own AI rooted in magisterium and logos — a logos machine running on transformer architecture.

Hamas as Roundheads

A subtle reading that complicates the simple "Islamic jihad" framing (raw/keep/hamas-as-roundheads.md):

Hamas is misread as Muslim fanatics. They are post-modern cultural Marxists wearing Islam's skin — universalist Roundheads/Levelers against Zionist "Cavaliers."

Hamas's organizational form (cell, manifesto, propaganda apparatus, international solidarity network) is European-leftist; the Islamic content is veneer. The structural enemy in Gaza is not the Caliph but the international left, fighting under cover of the local religion. This complicates the "Islam vs. West" story by pointing out that the most visible "Islamic" actor in the contemporary news is structurally the least Islamic.

Iran strategy

Iran is treated mostly geopolitically, not as a primary religious-civilizational actor (raw/keep/iran-strategy.md). The summary:

• Iran cannot invade anyone and seeks Persian-hegemony neutralism.
• US strategy in the Red Sea is "kick the dog until it bites" — fund Houthis, manufacture an incident, justify escalation.
• A nuclear Iran would invite an Israeli or American strike.
• The structural goal is to keep Iran constrained without letting it consolidate as a coherent regional power.

The civilizational-Islam frame the rest of the article uses barely engages Iran as Shia or as Persian. This is a gap worth flagging: Iran is the largest Shia state and its theology, jurisprudence, and political form differ from the Sunni Caliphate model the rest of the article presupposes. The author's preference for "esoteric and mathematical" Islamic culture would point toward Persian Sufism specifically; the corpus does not develop this. (empire-and-geopolitics)

The personal preference

The author's personal aesthetic preference is recorded honestly (raw/keep/why-america-should-support-netanyahu-in-israel.md):

"Islam is a more interesting faith with more esoteric and mathematical elements to it, whereas Judaism is a legalistic systemic faith that hacks its way through social questions with a spaghetti code of patches and workarounds." — raw/keep/why-america-should-support-netanyahu-in-israel.md

The reconciliation with the structural critique: the critique is of fused regulator-executive, not of Muslim peoples or Islamic aesthetics. Persian poetry, Ottoman architecture, the geometric tradition, the apophatic mystical theology of Ibn 'Arabi and Rumi — these are admired without reservation. Sharia-as-state-law is opposed without reservation. The two judgments are compatible at the level of structure but routinely confused in popular discourse.

Standing problems and gaps

• Stagnation thesis vs. golden age. The Abbasid intellectual flowering (al-Kindi through Ibn Khaldun) and the Ottoman cultural depth sit in tension with the broad "fused regulator-executive = stagnation" claim. The article preserves the tension by dating the closure specifically to post-12th-century Ash'arite victory.
• Möngke Khan attribution. raw/keep/enlightenment-the-gates-of-ijtihad.md credits the closing to Möngke Khan; standard accounts attribute it to internal Sunni jurisprudence centuries earlier. The Mongol sack of Baghdad is 1258 (Hulagu, not Möngke). raw/keep/zombie-religions.md says "12th century"; raw/keep/peer-review-is-anti-creative.md says "10th century." The article flags rather than papers over the inconsistency.
• Caliphate as living office. raw/keep/zombie-religions.md asserts the Caliph "is held today by the King of Jordan." The title is broadly considered abolished 1924; the claim is contestable and the article notes it.
• "American Islam" elasticity. The term covers CN, IIP, globalism, AI/woke, the Constitution-as-Quran. Risk: the metaphor does too much work and loses analytic edge. The article uses it sparingly and only in its strict structural sense.
• Hamas-as-Roundheads complicates the otherwise straightforward "Islamic jihad" framing.
• Ottoman millet system is absent from the central thesis. The millet system gave non-Muslim communities substantial communal autonomy — exactly the kind of pluralism the "fused regulator-executive" model says Islam can't accommodate. The corpus does not engage this counter-evidence.
• Iran as Shia / Persian rather than as Caliphate-form is undeveloped.
